Shannon’s interest in childbirth was sparked one summer in a local library during the course of her college education. Four years later, that spark caught fire during her first pregnancy. After a less-than-ideal birth experience, she learned valuable lessons about finding her voice and inner strength in the midst of adversity. Shortly after the birth of her second child in 2006, she discovered a calling to educate and encourage pregnant women and the families who support them.
As a life-long learner, teaching childbirth education seemed a natural step to Shannon. In 2007, she trained with and began teaching classes in The Bradley Method of Natural Childbirth. Shannon then went on to design and implement an independent childbirth education series for the families of Champaign-Urbana in 2012. Her primary class goals are to encourage mothers and their partners in the many transitions faced during the childbearing years, to empower them with knowledge and understanding of all available options, and embolden families to fearlessly make their own choices.
In 2014, Shannon was able to fulfill another personal dream by diving into doula work. She trained as a birth doula with toLabor (formerly ALACE) and has been actively supporting local families in that role ever since.
She loves theatre, coffee, chocolate, napping and deep conversations. Shannon’s days consist of laughing through life with her husband of 12 years and homeschooling her five spirited children, all of whom challenge her to be a better version of herself daily.
